I had the pleasure of visiting Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in December as part of the Transat network’s first ever same-sex destination wedding fam, and I’ve gotta tell you, it was an amazing experience all around.
There were about 30 travel agents across Canada that attending the informative week-long experience, learning about which resorts not only hosted destination weddings, but were also open to or certified to also host LGBTQ weddings as well. In total we visited 15 different resorts and each and every one of them was open to LGBTQ weddings! A couple of the resorts have not yet hosted a LGBTQ wedding but they were anxious to get involved.
Now a little about Puerto Vallarta…I had visited Cancun & Riviera Maya in the past, these popular destinations on the east coast of Mexico are much more easily accessible from Atlantic Canada with a number of direct flights leaving from Moncton, Fredericton & Halifax weekly. Puerto Vallarta is on the west coast and requires a connecting flight. But let me tell you, it’s worth it! It felt like a whole other world. The streets were clean and showed their historic roots – cobblestone and coloured flags strewn across the buildings, palm trees dotting the sidewalks and shoreline, and the sound of the ocean crashing on the beach could be heard from most of the rooms at each resort. It was so relaxing. The people were helpful & friendly, the city felt safe and welcoming, the local markets (Malecon) had amazing locally made souvenirs and artwork. It is my favourite place to date!
Some of the resorts we visited were from many areas around the surrounding Puerto Vallarta area from Riviera Nayarit to Mismaloya. They covered most budgets and needs, some adults only, others more family friendly. Here is the list of properties we viewed:
- Grand Fiesta Americana adults only
- Grand Sirenis Matlali Hills
- Hard Rock Vallarta
- Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit
- Occidental Nuevo Vallarta
- Melia Puerto Vallarta
- Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta
- Now Amber
- Secrets Vallarta Bay
- Casa Velas
- Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel
- Hyatt Ziva & Hyatt Zilara
- Barcelo Puerto Vallarta
- Garza Blanca
- Hotel Mousai
I would love to send more couples to visit the charm and romance of Puerto Vallarta. Love is love, and this resort city surely knows how to show their openness and appreciation of that!
